The International Stroke Conference is the world’s premier meeting dedicated to the science and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. The event features more than 1,700 presentations in more than 20 categories focusing on clinical community risk factors and vascular biology in health and disease.

As past chair of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) Accrediation and Certification Committee as well as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee, Petra President, Craig Beam had the unique opportunity to attend this year’s Conference Awards Banquet in Los Angeles where several hundred hospitals were recognized for meeting the guideline standards for stroke treatment.

He was inspired by the stories he heard at the event, particularly that of table-mate Sharon Epperson, CNBC Senior Personal Finance Correspondent. In September 2016, Epperson sustained a ruptured brain aneurysm and nearly lost her life. Since then, she has become an advocate for raising awareness about brain aneurysms and funding for research. In September 2018, she and her family established “The Sharon Epperson Chair of Research” through the Brain Aneurysm Foundation to help educate 200 lawmakers on what needs to be done to combat brain aneurysm disease.

The event keynote speaker was Jennie Garth, a castmate of Luke Perry on the show on the popular show Beverly Hills, 90210. In 2019, Perry died suddenly from a stroke at only 52 years old. Garth spoke about the loss of her friend and the impact that cardiovascular disease has had on her family.

With over 1,000 attendees, this year’s awards banquet recognized ongoing contributions in the areas of investigation and management of stroke in the basic and clinical science categories as well as excellence in mentorship and community outreach related to stroke.
